Farm Unit

Our theme this month at preschool is the FARM! We've been learning all about farms through stories, songs, and games. Here's a few of our favorites from this month...

This center uses pom poms and mini tongs to add apples to the apple trees. So many skills at work here! Fine motor pinching, color sorting, turn-taking, etc :) Later in the year we use this game again with dice (one with numbers, one with colors). It's an easy one to make and put together!

The LEGO center on the left (below) was donated a few years ago by one of our generous preschool parents. The kids can look at the book to learn how to build farm animals with the Duplo blocks. On the right is a Lakeshore game. It's one of my favorites! The cards at the back of the sorting tray tell the students how to sort the mini animals- by color, by size, by mouth (beak or teeth), body covering (wool, hair, or feathers), and more! It's great!

This (very blurry) picture shows our felt wall and the felt farm. I love that this center builds vocabulary about our theme and gets the kids talking about what they know!

Another favorite activity- these farm sticker sheets! There's not enough room on the scenery page for ALL of the stickers, so each child gets to choose which farm animals will make the cut :) Each picture turns out different! I also love that the peeling and sticking sneaks in some extra fine motor practice!! While the kids work on this activity, I like to walk around and describe their pictures using positional words like beside, behind, on top of, next to, etc. They think they're just playing with stickers, but just look at all the skills we are building!! I'm very sneaky!

We also got to visit a REAL farm and meet Farmer Tyson who taught us about his cows. We learned that some cows make milk, and some are used for beef. These cows eat only grass and hay to keep their meat extra tasty. Farmer Tyson even told us that he gives the cows medicine when they get sick!

Stay tuned for Farm Unit Part 2: Chicken Week! :)
