Chickens

Chicken week!

As part of our farm unit at preschool, we spent a few days learning all about CHICKENS! We read one of my favorite books, Rosie's Walk, by Pat Hutchins. In this story, Rosie the hen goes for a nice walk around the farmyard, blissfully unaware that a sly fox is right behind her!

This story always gets my favorite reading response from the kids: "Read it again!!" So of course, we do! After a few readings, we set up a Rosie-style obstacle course in our classroom. The kids had to go under the table, over the chairs, and around the rug. It was lots of fun!

We also got to visit Nana B's chicken coop! She taught us all about taking care of chickens. We learned that her chickens eat mostly bugs, but she also gives them a special food to keep their eggs strong and healthy. She showed us the special mix of food and let us feed the chickens in their yard!

((How cute are these chicken hats we made??))

Nana B also showed us where the chickens go to sleep and lay their eggs. We looked in the laying boxes, and guess what!? There were just enough eggs for our class! ;)

We had a super day at the coop! Thanks, Nana B!!
